It's complicated

The political situation in Egypt is – to say the least – a huge mess. With a population of roughly 90 million people there are about 90 million different political stances. What we used to call the silent majority is not necessarily very silent now and is not necessarily in agreement even if it remains the "majority". I've been trying to find an easy way to lay down the picture for you but I couldn't, so you might need to read this piece several times and my guess is, it still won't make any sense.

Beyond Face Value and Behind Closed Doors

The current events gripping Egypt should not be taken at face value. The discussions about a presidential council, boycotting the elections, Ganzoury government or the SCAF willingly relinquishing power are all solutions for a symptom but not addressing the real issues. The SCAF never cared about constitution first/elections first nor do they care about which Prime Minister is in place. What they have wanted all the time is to protect their backs as they leave the scene as well as retaining some or all of their historical powers. What we are going through right now is a fight between the street and the SCAF for the position of the army in a civilian managed state. 

The Fight

Ever since Tuesday January 25^th, I've been in a fighting mode. At first it was the fight to oust Mubarak, then it was the fight for the Referendum. A fight that I thought we lost to Islamists and the apathetic majority, which – as it turns out – was a fight we both lost to the SCAF. Nevertheless, at the time, I took it like a true sportsman and decided to turn my attention to

رسالة إلى العقلاء: يا عزيزى كلنا ضحايا

ما حدث فى ماسبيرو مصيبة بكل المعانى. ولا أعنى ما حدث من الجيش، لأنه لم يدهشنى.. ولا أتحدث عن الشهداء، فهم فى عالم أحسن من عالمنا اليوم وأدعو أن يتولاهم الله برحمته.. ولكن ما هالنى هو حجم الكراهية الطائفية التى إجتاحت الجميع فى أعقاب هذا اليوم المشؤم.. هذا الإعصار من الجهل الذى أتى على كل ما لدى هذا الشعب من السماحة والتسامح.. هذا الكم الهائل من التعصب الأعمى من جميع الأطراف. والمصيبة الحقيقية هى عندما يبدأ جذب الوسطيين إلى الأقطاب وتحويلهم إلى متطرفين بسبب الشحن الأحمق من الجهلاء والمغرضين.
